1st Reflection on use of ICT for the month of September, through we-chat forum discussion 2019
On 3rd September 2019, I used We-chat to integrate
ICT in my lesson for class VI and the subject was Social Studies. The topic was
on types of Transport. I have used We-chat especially to let parents involve
equally in letting the children learn effectively. For this I have provided
series of questions as a home task where by children need to answer through
triangular discussion.
The triangular discussion means discussion between a
child, parent and the teacher using the We-chat as the means of communication. The
timing is fixed at 6:30 P.M. because many parents return home at 6:00 PM from
their regular work. The discussion started from 6:15 PM to 7:30 PM. which compressed of 1 hour 15 minutes.
The home task questions for triangular discussion were as follow.
1.
What is transportation mean to you and your family?
2.
How many types of transport do we have in our country?
3.
How does transportation help you during emergency?
4.
What could be some of the transportation that you used in olden
days?
5.
How was the transportation system change over past?
6.
What type of transportation you use at present?
7.
Any further discussion related to the topic.
I have used We-chat as a means to teach this lesson
because almost all the parents have We-chat facility and I have class we-chat
group where parents are invited and added. However, I have asked those students
to take help of nearby friends and parents to communicate who do not have
We-chat facility.
This strategy was so interactive because both parents and
students are used to We-chat. Most of the parents have interacted with
the teacher either through voice message or in the written. Integrating this
ICT means was found to be so meaningful for teaching this particular topic. It
not only helped in teaching and learning but also strengthened the bond relation between
the parents and teacher. Moreover that we can keep our children engage in
activities though they are out of school boundary. The most successful thing
was that both parents and students were able to understand what, why and how
about the transportation system of our country. I was so proud that all the
students could easily understand the whole chapter on transportation when they
come to next class. Parents were encouraged and suggested similar way to be
used in future for the better learning and understanding of the students. There
was lots of sharing which are different views from one another. I as a teacher
could also learn so many from diverse background of parents.
However, there were few challenges. Some parents took lot
of time in discussing the actual point or a question. They spent time in
talking some other issues which were not related to topic. There were few parents
who did not have we-chat and they failed to participate in the forum discussion. The other challenge was I had to explain and ask in
their local dialect (Bumthap kha). I had to explain the same issue or discuss
too many parents and students because to make them clear on topic and questions
that are discussing.
I must also make it clear
to parents that they must not talk anything which is not related to the topic. This
kind of arrangement will definitely solve the problem.
However, integrating ICT such as We-chat in
teaching this particular topic really helped both teacher and parents. I could
fulfill the lesson objective involving parents. I am thinking same to conduct in future lesson and some of my friends also started to use such discussion.

ReplyDeleteI agreed with you sir . Through wechat we can fulfiĺl our teaching objectives too because last year i did the same thing . Taught màthematics through wechat and did revesion too. But every student's parents should have wechat. That is only one point where we have to be little careful. Keep it up sir.
ReplyDeleteAmazing!!! You always wanted to do something differently and here you have done an interesting triangular discussion. I have never thought of teaching as you have done it. It's nice to see some of your parents have participated in the group discussion. I know it would be hard to use your same approach but once in a while I will try to follow your teaching strategy....keeping going sir
ReplyDeleteWonderful idea sir. I want to try out your idea in my locality as most of the parents in my locality are literate. I feel it would be very effective. Well thought idea sir. In some cases, parents will be in better person to deliver the concepts. Keep going sir.
ReplyDeleteSir Kinzang you have used wechat as your home task teaching. Seems it worked good with your lesson and i wanted to try yours idea as I too have a group with my students. Thanks for comming with a new idea and keep on sharing your ideas which definitely will help my students.
ReplyDeleteThank you friends. It works la. You will try and see the consequences in learning la.
ReplyDeleteIts nice to know that you used we chat forum as at present we chat is very popular and every one used it. Good work keep it up.
ReplyDeleteGood idea, however I am skeptic that such method would be challenging and at times it might turn to create what not things besides the intended purpose.
ReplyDeleteThus, I don't find this method to be very effective.
Anyway, I will it too and see how effective it is.
You can use this method Mr kesang and see how it works. Different people have different perspective so why can't you try la.
ReplyDeleteI assume that this is the new ict knowledge to me. You have had a nice lesson with the students discussing through we-chat forum. So i want to practice.
ReplyDeletesir i have never used wechat for my lesson but you have used it.Is really a new idea for me.Keep it up
ReplyDeleteWow Wonderful sir. Even I want to try out your idea in my teaching and learning. For educative parents, I feel it would be very effective.
ReplyDeleteWell, I have learned many things through your post, sir. Keep going sir.
Good idea Kinzang sir.i would like to try your idea
ReplyDeleteGood idea of integrating ICT in teaching and learning process. It's good that you have set fixed timing for the discussion plus have set rule for your class wechat forum which would solve the problem of unnecessary talk/chat...Great job la
ReplyDeleteIt was a great story for all of us and also I feel it is really handy. But it may not be able to apply in boarding schools as children are not allowed to take their phone with them.
ReplyDeleteIt's just my personal view based on ground reality.
Wow!this seems interesting sir, WeChat discussion and triangular discussion. Inspiring strategy sir. However, is time fixation necessary? Because all the children are not fortunate, we have to think about many obstacles and challenges. Ofcoure, you are being so positive that non of your children would face any type of challenges, but it's important if we have some alternative plan B at the back of our mind. Other than that your strategy was awesome, and I thought it serves a lot of purposes- revision, homework, remedial class.
ReplyDeleteGood idea of integrating ICT in classroom teaching and learning process through wechat forum. As said by some of our friends, in some cases, parents will be in better person to deliver the concepts. Keep going sir.
ReplyDeleteThese days we chat has been very popular amongst our uneducated Bhutanese especially in the remote part of the country and therefore you took the oppertunity to use it wisely. When you discuss the transport system in our country our children knows the modern type more in detail...however parents will explain more detail for old type of transport system where by your children will have more option or resources. It was your great idea. I liked it and wanted to try too.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading your reflection it appeared to me that sir had used wechat to discuss question and answer.it was a good ideas.keep it up la.
ReplyDeleteWhatsapp, telegram and messenger also some to the media where you can share information and the advantage is this apps allows videos with more Mb (space or memory).
ReplyDeleteNew idea to involve parents but it will be challenging in terms of time, language and facilities.
ReplyDeleteIT is a great idea provided all our parents are educated and children use the device meaningfully.
ReplyDeleteWow! you have taken timely opportunity wisely which is very popular this days even among our uneducated Bhutanese people especially in the far flung places of the country.
ReplyDeleteWhile discussing about the transport system in our country, our children really knows the modern types of transportation in detail.
It was your great idea and perfect lesson. Liked it and wanted to try too even in my coming up classes.
Thanks for sharing sir...
