Reflection on ICT integration in T/L for the Month of August, 2019
On 19th August, I have integrated ICT in teaching Dzongkha for class II. The topic was on fruits “Shingdrey”) a short essay/story to develop the listening and speaking skills in children. The essay/story to be narrated was about “Types of fruits”. Till now, this topic was taught simply reading an essay/story by the teacher or made the students to read the essay/story written on a chart. However, this time, I thought of teaching this topic using the ICT so that the teaching won’t be a monotonous.
To teach the topic in an interesting way, I first recorded the whole essay/story in an audio form in my own voice keeping all the necessary requirements of telling/ narrating an essay in mind. Then, I played the audio using the speaker and a mobile phone in a class and let the children listen very carefully. Several questions were prepared for the children to answer after listening to essay.
Children were so excited to listen for essay/story because it was arranged in a unique way. All the children were asked to listened story/essay carefully. After listening to essay/story most of the children could answer the questions asked from the topics that were discussed. However, there were some challenges such as few children who were southern and typical Eastern Bhutanese could not catch up the words in the story/essay in detail because it was a Dzongkha story/essay and the audio was played just once. The other challenge was managing all those necessary materials such as quality speaker and quality audio recorder.
I could prepare a lesson and was able to manage all the required materials on time as I have planned since a week before. After the question answer session, I could realize that at least I should have played the audio for two times so that all the children could understand the story/essay very well. This was my drawback this time while integrating the ICT in the Teaching Learning purpose. I will definitely improve my way of presenting when I teach similar topics using the ICT in future. I learnt that I must not take into granted that everyone in the class has the same ability of listening skill. I learnt this because at the end of question answer session those few children wanted to listen to the story/essay ones again and they said they could not understand the story/essay well. Keeping all these in mind, I will try to present in a better way next time. The lesson was so interactive. All most all the children could express what they felt or understood about the story/essay. I was happy that I could fulfill my lesson objective.
